Tutorial: Adding Your Existing Web Domain as Your BlueSky Handle:

  1. Login to your BlueSky account on a web browser.
  2. Go to Settings > Account > Handle
  3. Select “I have my own domain”. This will take you to a screen like the one below. Make note of the “did=…” you’ll need it later. Do not close our your web browser tab you’ll come back to it later.

4. Open a new browser tab and login to your web registrar (e.g. godaddy.com)

5. Go to the page for your web domain (e.g. danasferguson.com)

6. Go to where your web domain’s DNS records are managed (example in godaddy below)

8. Add a DNS record of type TXT. Enter “_atproto” for Name. Enter that “did=…” for Value. Leave TTL as the default. Save.

9. Go back to your web browser tab where you had the BlueSky handle info. Click “Verify DNS Record”. If the test succeeds, congratulations! Your handle has been changed to your web domain!

10. You will likely be logged out of BlueSky in which case you can now login with your username being your web domain.

11. If you host a website at the web domain that is itself a website the public trusts or links to other trusted websites that the public trusts (for example, I linked to my LinkedIn and Twitter profiles) then your BlueSky profile should inherit the same trust.
